Dragon Quest IV Chapters of the Chosen is a role-playing game. It was initially called Dragon Warrior IV in North America. It is the fourth installment in the Dragon Quest series, published by Enix, and the first of the Zenithian Trilogy. It was initially released in Japan for the Famicom on February 11, 1990.
Heartbeat for PlayStation remade the game, eventually making it available as an Ultimate Hits title. The remake was then followed by another one by ArtePiazza, which was released worldwide in September 2008 and Japan in November 2007. In 2014, a version based on the Nintendo DS remake was released for Android and iOS.
Dragon Quest IV is different from other games because it has five chapters. Each chapter focuses on a different protagonist. The Hero’s future companions tell the story, while the Hero’s perspective tells the story. The fifth chapter brings together all the characters as they quest to save the world. A sixth chapter was added to the PlayStation remake, which is preserved in the DS remake.

Dragon Quest IV Walkthrough Chapter 1
Clear the room of all pots and barrels before you start the game. This will give you a Seed Of Strength, a Medicinal Herb, and 3 Gold Coins. Once you are done, exit to the north. For an Antidote herb, smash the barrels and cross the bridge. The frog will speak to you, and you can enter the basement where we just came from. Talk to the red-haired girl in the basement. This is the proper form of the frog.
The westernmost part of the village is where you will find your Hero’s house. Once you have spoken to Eliza, the red-haired frog girl, you will want to enter this Building to talk to the man at the table. This will help move the story forward.
This is how the game works. You’ll be switching between four characters for the first half. Each character has their own story to tell. Once you are done, you can return to the Hero to continue the game. The entire party will then come together.
Although it won’t take long to complete these characters’ adventures, some grinding is required when you first get control of a new character. It is recommended that you keep the Seeds of Strength/Wisdom items until you regain control of the Hero. Then, you can use all of them on him.
The King will explain the situation once you have taken control of Ragnar. He has issued an AMBER Alert on some children; you must play Batman to save them. Southeast of Ragnar’s castle, you will find a Medicinal Herb. Once you have it, you can leave the court.
This guide will not direct you to every treasure in every town. However, I will tell you where to find the most important. You will discover many barrels, pots, and drawers in this town that you can use to smash items. You can also rotate the Camera using the R + and L buttons if you have trouble seeing where you are going.
You’ll find it just south of the Church. It has a building (shown below in my screenshot) that houses a woman who walks around the front during the day. Talk to her! It is required for story advancement. You’ll find the Seed of Strength inside the chest in the Building, just to the left of the entrance.
It’s time for some grinding after you leave town. You’ll want to grind outside of town for the next 20 to 30 minutes. If you are too ill to rest at the Inn or become poisoned, go to the Church to get treatment.
After you have enough gold:
- Visit the armor shop to purchase some headgear.
- Spend the remaining Medicinal Herbs in the item shop, then once you feel confident enough to walk far from town without getting lost, stop at the Inn.
- Continue northwest until you reach a cave (see the screenshot below).
Burland Story Requirements:
– Talk to Aigneas, Angus’ wife
Burland Cavern is very straightforward. There are two treasure chests within the cave – one with 40 Gold Coins and another with a Medicinal Herb. You can find the stairs leading to the dungeon’s exit in the northern section. A bit further east from Burland Cave’s exit is Strathbaile, a small settlement.
You can find a few items in this town hidden in bookshelves, drawers, pots, barrels, and drawers. To advance the story, you need to talk to Angus, a prisoner in the basement. The stairs leading to the basement can be found in the northeastern section of town, near the Church.
To speak with Angus, you will need to open the menu and choose “Talk” from there. You’ll only interact with the door, and you won’t be able to speak with him.
Strathbaile Story Requirements:
Angus, the basement prisoner, can be reached at Angus.
– (After speaking with Angus) Go back to Burland and speak to Aigneas. Then, bring her back to Angus.
Once you have spoken with Angus, you will want to return to Burland to talk to his wife, Agnes. You can add her to your party as a non-combatant. Return to Angus in Strathbaile. Angus will have his memories back when Angus and his spouse are reunited.
Our next destination is in the forest, southeast of Strathbaile. Make sure you are well-healed and have enough Medicinal Herbs to last at least 20-30 battles before leaving town. It can be confusing to find the next dungeon, and there won’t be a map.
You’ll simply need to walk around the forest southeast from Strathbaile until you reach a new spot containing a purple-slime stream and a well you can descend to the north. You can proceed by falling into the well.
You’ll see a message throughout the dungeon when you go in the right direction. It says, “Over here.” This will take you to Healie, the heal slime. Healing isn’t a requirement, but he is an excellent help as Ragnar cannot heal himself without Medicinal Herbs.
The Hidden Playground requires a story.
Grab Talaria from Treasure Chest in Dungeon
Talk to Healie about joining your party.
One floor up from Healie is a treasure chest containing the Talaria. This is the item for which we came to this dungeon. You can see the chest’s location in the screenshot to the left. It’s also known as Winged Shoes in another version of the game.
Take Healie’s and the Winged Shoes with you and head back to Strathbaile. You’ll need to continue climbing until you reach the pit, which you will want to descend into. You’ll find a staircase that will take you to a large room with tons of treasures.
You can then return to Strathbaile and purchase any equipment you require. Next, head west from Strathbaile and to Strathbaile Tower. You can stand anywhere you like around the water’s edge. Then, go into your inventory to use the Talaria item we received from the previous dungeon. This will take you to the top.
Talk to the boy standing near the monster. He will retreat inside if you try to talk to him. Navigation is easy. However, you will need to find the treasure chests. One has a Cautery Sword inside, which has more attack power than any other weapon. It is best to equip it once you locate it immediately.
Continue to descend until you reach the basement where the child and the monster we saw when we arrived are waiting. You will also find an older man standing on a piece of stone. Talking with the older man will set off the boss fight. Get ready to heal!
The boss fight should be won by the Winky first. After that, you can focus on the boss. The argument should not be complex, but if you haven’t spent time buying gear or grinding gold, you will need to be at least level 9-10 before you challenge this boss.
Once you have defeated the boss, go up one floor and exit the tower. At ground level, you will be outside. To send the Talaria item up to the top building, you will need to use the Talaria item. From there, you can turn around to walk away. This will return you to the riverside Strathbaile is on.
Return the children to Strathbaile and then go back to Burland. If you wish, you can use Chimera Wing to fly to Burland quickly. Talk to the King of Burland to get your last reward for saving the children.

Dragon Quest IV Walkthrough Chapter 2
Alena, a young woman, is your protagonist in this new chapter of your journey. This chapter begins at Zamoksva Castle, which is located in Zelenograd. Once Alena is under your control, you can search the castle for items you can use in your adventure.
You’ll want to talk with Kiryl while you search the castle. He’s on the ground floor in the Church section of the court. This will allow us to exit the castle as the man building Alena’s bedroom upstairs will leave.
You’ll find Alena’s bedroom. A hole in the wall has been boarded with wooden planks. You’ll be outside the castle if you can break through it. You will find two other people jumping down to the ground level from the same hole as you and joining you on your adventure.
Story requirements for Zamoksva Castle
Talk to Kiryl in the church
– Enter Alena’s Room to break through the wall
You will be able to see the World Map by leaving the castle. To your left is Zalenagrad, which should be your first stop. You will find a single Seed Of Agility in this town, in a barrel near the Weapon Shop owner. There is also an armor shop that you’ll want to visit a few times before going to the north dungeon. Headgear is a great value and provides excellent armor value.
You’ll want to grind outside Zalenagrad until your team is level 3+ and has some armor. Next, we’ll need to visit Tabarov, located northeast of Zelenograd. See my screenshot below.
Anastasia is located in Tabarov, just above the Inn. She will also help you to grab the Seed of Agility from her barrel. Anastasia is not the only person you need to contact. Her father, who can be found in the large Building at the eastern end of town on the east side in the city, will help you get the priest to talk with you. If you are ready to take on this monster head-on, visit the Church and talk with the priest.
Tabarov Story Requirements:
– Talk with Anastasia (western Building)
– Talk to Anastasia’s father about the eastern Building
– Inform the priest that you are ready to fight the monster
You should be at least level 5 to proceed. If you prefer, you can save before you fight the boss and continue retrying until he is defeated. It’s not difficult but the fight can be won in one round. If you have better gear or higher levels, your weaker members of the party will also be defeated.
It is highly recommended that you concentrate almost exclusively on the Foo Dogs for this boss fight and eliminate them as fast as possible. Borya and Kiryl can be defeated if they attack each other in one turn.
Master Kung is a powerful attacker. Keep everyone at least 1/2 healthy by using Kiryl and whittle him down with melee strikes. This is it! After you defeat Master Kung, you will be back in Tabarov, and the Item Shop will be open again. You can shop here if desired or head north (through the Church) to Vrenor. This small town is located to northeast from Tabarov. The monsters will take a massive jump in difficulty along the way, so be cautious.
You’ll need to go to the second floor to stop a kidnapping when you arrive in Vernor. The kidnappers will lead you out of town. Then you’ll re-enter Vernor. You’ll be able this time to stay at the Inn, which you will probably use from our travels over here.
You’ll need to talk with the boy who is walking around the fountain in central Vrenor to move the story forward. He will tell you about the Ransom Letter his dog discovered. Talk with him after speaking with him. Our next stop is the Vault of Vrenor where he will inform you about a bracelet.
Story requirements for Vrenor
– Take a look at the scene from the second floor of Inn, then leave the area.
Talk to the boy at the Vrenor well for the Ransom letter
Talk to the man in Vrenor’s northern region about the Sparkly Bracelet.
You’ll need to grind first before you can proceed to the Vault of Vrenor. It is a good idea to grind around Vrenor until you have your whole party level 8 or 9. It will take some time and you might want to go back to Tabarov to purchase some armor/weapons from the Item Shop before you move on.
Note: Hunter’s Bow can be purchased in Tabarov at The Item Shop. It can be used on your entire group. You can double your damage output from melee attacks by purchasing one. It is strongly recommended that you purchase one for each character.
You’ll find the Vault of Vrenor south of Vrenor when you are ready to enter it. For additional guidance, see my screen shot below.
The Vault of Vrenor is an easy dungeon that has lots of Treasure Chests. The only item you need to find within the vault is the Amulet of Transmutation. This item can be found on the second floor at the southernmost end of the dungeon (shown in my screen capture above).
Once you have retrieved the Amulet of Transmutation, return to Vrenor. You can then roam about outside of town until night falls. Three NPCs will be appearing in Vrenor at the northern end, in the cemetery. These NPCs will need the Amulet of Transmutation to exchange the Thief’s Key.
Note: The Seed of Life is located in the Garden at the Southern End of the Town. The priest blocks the path during the day, but he does not block the way at night.
You’ll be able to spend the night at Inn after you have received the Thief’s Key. You will find the Weapon Shop in this area. The only upgrade I think is worth buying is the Iron Lance for Kiryl. This assumes that you have a Hunter’s Bow.
No matter what your preference, you can continue south from the Vault of Vrenor to reach the Desert Bazaar. This small village is located in the middle of the vast desert. This town has an Armor and Weapon Shop that sells many upgrades for your team. You can choose to purchase them now or later.
To move the story forward, there will be lots of running. A guard will stop you from entering the large tent at the Desert Bazaar’s western end. He will tell you that your father is sick and you must return to him.
A Chimera Wing is the fastest way to return home to Zamoksva Castle. Talk to the advisor (the man in purple) once you have reached the King’s Room. He will tell you to talk with Starek, who lives in the back of the castle close by the garden. You will need to go through the hole in Alena’s wall and enter the blue door that leads to Starek. Starek is the man in this room.
Story requirements for Desert Town – Desert Tower
– Enter the large tent at Desert Town, and be stopped by a guard
– Go to Zamoksva Castle, and talk with the advisor.
– Talk to Starek at the castle’s back
Josef Starling can be reached in the nearby village from the top of the Church’s balcony.
Starek instructs you to speak with Josef Starling, who lives in the village west of Zamoksva Castle. Josef can be found on the second floor balcony at the Church. See my screen shot above. He reveals to you that he gained his voice back after consuming a potion he bought at the Desert Bazaar.
You guessed it! Chimera Wing. Or, go back to Desert Bazaar and talk with the lady in the item shop. You’ll be told to head southwest from the Desert Bazaar towards the Desert Tower. It is highly recommended that you are at least level 10 before you enter this dungeon. You should grind if you are not at least level 10.
Through the double yellow/brown door, you will find an Inn on the first floor. If you have trouble finding the location, use the L + R buttons. This is how you should proceed in this dungeon. You can spend your time exploring the treasure chests or leveling up. It is not difficult to find the dungeon so you don’t need any guidance. Borya can use her Evac ability to save MP when Kiryl is low and then sleep in the Inn.
You can leave this area by going to the top of the tower, where you will find two elf girls. You’ll be given some nectar to help you flee the area. Grab it and Evac. Return to your father with the nectar in your hand. He will then open your inventory and allow you to use it while standing before him. You will be granted permission to leave the continent.
Head east and zoom over to Desert Bazaar. A small dome-shaped building will allow you to teleport across water. The castle town of Endor is located to the south of the new land mass. See my screen shot below.
This chapter is almost over. To speak with the King in Endor and find out his plan to have a female win the colosseum matches, then have her participate in the match in the colosseum and win. This is a great opportunity to get Medicinal Herbs from Alena and be at least level 14.
Colosseum matches are easy. You’ll only control Alena for each fight, and you’ll be spamming regular attacks most of the time. You’ll have the option to heal yourself with any Medicinal Herbs between each fight.
You will find the castle deserted after you have won the colosseum tournament. Just like always, you can travel through the castle to get out of Alena’s hole. To end Alena’s Chapter, exit to the world map.
