The Overwatch crew faced a challenging task in finding the perfect voice actors for their characters. However, they were able to assemble a cast that exceeded expectations. Each voice actor and actress who attended BlizzCon shared their personal journey and the inspiration behind their portrayal of the characters.
Cara Theobold, who voiced Tracer, expressed her excitement about attending her first convention. She particularly enjoyed the animated shorts that showcased Tracer’s softer side. In fact, she even dedicated time in her London flat to practice Tracer’s giggle.
Darin De Paul, the voice behind Reinhardt, drew inspiration from his own father, but amplified it to match the character’s larger-than-life personality. Reinhardt, being the heart of the team, embodied the role of everyone’s granddad.
Paul Nakauchi, who portrayed Hanzo, believed that his character was deeply troubled by the fact that he had killed his own brother. This served as his motivation for living and moving forward. Nakauchi also found inspiration in Kurosawa films.
Charlet Chung, the voice of D.Va, described her experience of playing the character as life-changing. The overwhelming fan art and the association with popular snacks like Doritos and Mtn Dew made her realize the immense popularity of Overwatch. Chung put her heart and soul into portraying D.Va, aiming to create a relatable and strong female gamer character.
Fred Tatasciore, who lent his voice to Soldier 76, emphasized the character’s unwavering dedication to Overwatch, despite being betrayed. Tatasciore found inspiration in an old photo book of World War II pictures shown to him by a relative. He aimed to capture the essence of war and portrayed Soldier 76 with a mix of pessimism and optimism, reminiscent of Clint Eastwood’s style.
In conclusion, each voice actor and actress brought their own unique inspiration and dedication to their respective Overwatch characters, resulting in a remarkable cast.
