In March, individuals throughout the United Kingdom will receive Census forms. Various groups, including No2ID and the Stop the War coalition, are urging people to boycott the Census due to concerns about state intrusion and the involvement of Lockheed Martin, a US arms manufacturer.
It is understandable that campaigners would utilize the upcoming Census as an opportunity to raise awareness about these issues. However, boycotting the Census is not the appropriate course of action.
According to the law, everyone is obligated to complete the Census, and failure to do so can result in fines. Moreover, the data collected from the Census plays a significant role in the distribution of funding for local services. For instance, one London borough estimates a loss of £22,000 per person who does not participate in the Census over the next decade.
While a boycott may have little impact on Lockheed Martin, as they will still receive payment for their involvement regardless of the number of participants, it will effectively reduce the availability of local services in your area.
It is disheartening to think that anyone, especially those who advocate for government resource allocation based on need, would consider such a course of action.
Even without counterproductive boycotts, it is likely that the Census returns will underestimate the population in deprived areas where individuals live in overcrowded conditions or have a more transient lifestyle.
If you wish to protest against the database state or war crimes, there are alternative methods that do not punish individuals in your community who rely on public services. Write to your Member of Parliament, donate the money saved from potential fines to a campaigning group, engage in meetings with like-minded individuals, and develop innovative campaigns.
Regardless of your chosen approach to activism, it is crucial to complete the Census and encourage everyone you know to do the same.
Update: No2ID has clarified that they are not advocating for a boycott of the Census. Instead, they emphasize the importance of keeping the data confidential and subsequently deleting it.
