Brandon Metcalf, a successful producer, engineer, and studio owner with almost a decade of experience, has recently launched the Destiny Nashville label. The label’s debut release, “The Cover Up,” is a 12-song collection of covers by primarily Nashville-based artists. Scheduled for release on April 22nd, the cover versions feature contributions from established artists and Nashville staples such as Secondhand Serenade, Amy Stroup, Elenowen, Brooke Waggoner, Ella Mae Bowen, and Trent Dabbs, with Metcalf overseeing production. “The Cover Up” will be available on all DSPs on the 22nd, while a special four-track selection from the album will also be released simultaneously on Noisetrade.
Metcalf commenced refining his production skills at a young age, utilizing the vibrant music scene of his hometown, Seattle, as the backdrop. Collaborating with a diverse group of renowned producers including Jim Wirt (Incubus), Jorge Vico (Josh Groban), and Tom Pfaeffle (Nirvana), he eventually ventured out on his own and established a personal home studio, marking the inception of the Destiny Collective. Over the following years, Metcalf dedicated his time to recording, producing, and nurturing numerous regional and national talents. In 2012, he made the decision to relocate to Nashville. Coincidentally, SoundShop Studios, a renowned establishment on Music Row that had previously hosted the likes of Paul McCartney, Dolly Parton, Alabama, Brooks & Dunn, and many others, became available. Metcalf seized the opportunity to take over the studio and restore its legendary status. Consequently, in September 2012, Destiny Nashville officially opened its doors.
In the summer of 2013, following their settlement, Metcalf and the Destiny crew initiated discussions about creating a covers album that would showcase the abundant talent in Nashville and unite various artists. Trent Dabbs was the first to join the project, and as time passed, The Cover Up took form, with additional artists eagerly joining the endeavor. Each artist took turns entering the studio to lay down vocals accompanied by simple acoustic guitars, establishing a basic foundation that allowed for creative reinterpretations of beloved songs. Live strings and other subtle instrumentation were later incorporated by the studio, enhancing the overall sound while maintaining an authentic and uncluttered arrangement.
The outcome is a collection of distinctive covers that span multiple decades of pop music, encompassing everything from timeless Dean Martin classics to 80’s hits by Roxette, as well as Brooke Waggoner’s unique rendition of a 90’s Nirvana grunge track. The album also features Trent Dabbs’ fresh interpretation of Drake’s recent R&B hit, “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” transformed into a beautiful, folk-inspired ballad.
