The decision made by Canonical to cease the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system was unexpected for numerous individuals. This tough choice was made due to the lack of enthusiasm from smartphone manufacturers and the community. Subsequently, UBPorts took on the responsibility of continuing the development of Ubuntu Touch.
As time progressed and the development of the Librem 5 open source smartphone gained traction, it formed partnerships with the GNOME and KDE projects. Community members also anticipated a potential collaboration with UBPorts. Thankfully, this partnership has now become a reality.
When the Librem 5 is released to pre-order customers, it will be among the select smartphones supporting the free and open source operating system.
Upon its public release in January 2019, the Librem 5 will come with PureOS and GNOME as the default operating system. Users will have the option to easily switch to Ubuntu Touch if they desire. This will provide users with three choices:
- Librem 5 with PureOS
- Librem 5 with PureOS (KDE Plasma Mobile)
- Librem 5 with Ubuntu Touch
This advancement is certainly intriguing and equally thrilling for open source enthusiasts seeking an alternative to Android and iOS.
