Procreate is a creative app that lets users easily draw beautiful pictures using a variety of drawing tools.
It is not uncommon for most multi-functional apps to have some sort of secret feature.
Pixel Art is a form of graphics design created using pixels – tiny squares used to represent images. Pixel artists work digitally, usually using software like Photoshop or GIMP. They manipulate these square shapes to produce amazing works of art.
Does Photoshop have a pixel art feature?
Procreate has many features built into its interface that allow users to easily draw beautiful artwork. However, there aren’t any pre-set options for drawing pixel art directly from the app itself. To do so would take several steps, including setting up custom brushes and adjusting color palettes. We’ll walk through each step here.
Procreate has been redesigned to work seamlessly across multiple devices including iPhone XS Max, iPad Air 2/Mini 4th Gen., iPod touch 7G, Macbook pro 2016, MacBook air 2015, iMac 27inch 5K Retina display, and Apple TV 4k.
Follow these instructions to create your profile:
Step 1 – Create The Brush
To draw pixel art, you must first learn how to paint using a single color per stroke. Without these techniques, your work won’t look like real, hand-painted artwork.
To crop and resize images, open any image file, tap on actions, and then choose Cropping & resizing.
To resize images, first toggle on the Resample button, then tap Size, and choose Pixel Width/Height. Then press OK. You’ll see the image resized.
Tap the top of the paper with your pencil. Don’t expect to see any changes; however, the surface should become slightly lighter.
4. Click on Layers, click on “Layer 1”, then press Ctrl+C. Copy the layer. Now paste the new image into Photoshop. Your screen should look like Figure 2 below.
Tap on the Brushes library, choose the most basic brush available and copy it.
Tap on the New Brush icon to access the Brush Studio.
Tap “Edit > Add Layer Style…” at the top left corner of the screen. Tap “Paste & Matching Borders” option at the bottom of the list. Select the Brush tool, select White Color, set Size to 10px, and click anywhere inside the shape layer box. Drag over any edges of the image to add a border around the object. Click OK. Now you should see the new line style added to the shape layer. Repeat steps 4–6 until you have applied enough styles to complete the look you desire.
Go to the Grain section and repeat the 7th step.
Turning off all the settings in the Scale section should reduce any unwanted effects caused by those features. Go into each feature individually and see if there are any options you can disable. For example, tap the color dynamics icon at the top left corner of the screen. Then scroll down until you find “Color Dynamics” and tap it again. Scroll down further until you reach “Reduce Opacity” and toggle it off. Repeat these steps for the rest of the settings.
9. In the Grain and Rendering section, only the settings for the Color Correction filter should be set to Zero; everything else should remain unchanged.
1. Click on Layer > New > Fill/Stroke..
2. Select Solid fill color #ffffff
3. Set Stroke Color to white
4. Change the width to 5px
5. Choose Gradient Overlay
6. Make sure the gradient stops at both ends
7. Check the box next to Linear
8. Go down to Transparency
9. Drag the slider until you reach around 30%
10. Save the file.
11. Now click File > Export Image
12. Name it ‘gradient’
13. Open Photoshop
14. Click Edit > Paste into
15. Close Photoshop
16. Repeat steps 4 through 6
17. Put the layer below the original image
18. Merge layers
19. Resize the new layer to 200 x 300 pixels
20. Duplicate the layer
21. Move the duplicate layer above the original
22. Use Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur
23. Increase the opacity of the blurred layer
24. Reduce the opacity of the original layer
25. Save
26. Done
27. Upload
28. Profit
29. Enjoy :)
Now hit ‘Done’ and you’ll see your new pixel brush appear onscreen.
Step 2 – Create The Canvas
1. Tap on the Dimensions tab.
3. Set the width and height of the canvas using these settings: Width = 160; Height = 144. Tap Save.
Tap on Actions > Drawings & Guides > Toggle On The Switch>Drawing Guide
Tap on Edit Drawing Guides, and change the grid spacing to 1 px.
You can now change the background colour to Black and decrease the thickness and opacity settings so they don’t affect your work too much.
You can find free Photoshop brush packs online at sites like Pixlr Brushes. They’re usually organized into categories like flowers, animals, food, etc., but there are many available. Just look around until you find something you like.
Step 3 – Draw!
If you paint using a brush, the paint spreads across the surface of the canvas until there are no empty spaces left. Then, once you stop painting, the pixels won’t change anymore.
Select colors, adjust the opacity of the tool, and make changes if necessary while you draw.

Learning pixel art isn’t hard if you follow these steps.
Pixel Art is a style of drawing developed using pixels instead of traditional lines. Pixel artists often draw freehand but sometimes they take inspiration from nature or culture. They usually doodle around until something interesting emerges. Then they refine the image into its final form.
Pixel Art can be simple and fast, but requires precision. Simplify everything down to its bare essentials. Be careful though; too many details can distract you from the overall picture.
Pixel art tutorials abound online, but where should you start learning about pixel art?
To create a beautiful pixel art image, you’ll need to understand the basics of painting and drawing techniques like shading, lighting, and composition.
It takes time and effort to improve yourself. Practice often so that you become better.
If you’re looking to learn programming, there are plenty of resources available today. From free sites like Codecademy to paid options like Treehouse, learning how to code has never been easier.
Find artists whose work appeals to you, and search through their portfolios. Once you’ve selected your favorites, download the images onto your device using any available software.
Take notes during class and study the instructor’s work. Then, take those ideas and apply them into your own art. This way you can learn from someone else’s mistakes and successes. Doing this could help you become better at drawing quicker.
