Digital Revolution in 2019
Known as the Third Industrial Revolution, this advancement is not just about technology but an organizational change too at the intersection of business and people, technology, etc. It started during the 1980s and is still going strong, this is the beginning of the Information Era.
Cloud technology business models – IaaS, PaaS, SaaS
Cloud computing is the next big step for the Internet that allows the corporate companies, governments and individuals to process and store the data and information in the data centres via remote access. It is a computing application that gives affordable access to advanced technology and allows the consumers to process and use their software, IT infrastructure, and platforms over a communication network on a host system.
Public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud, and community cloud are major cloud computing infrastructures.
IaaS (Infrastructure as a service) – In IaaS, the users can easily configure networks, storage, processing, and other fundamental computing resources that are required to run the applications and installing the applications and operating system required. The users are not completely authorized control or manage the underlying cloud infrastructure but they have control over the storage, operating systems, deployed applications, and limited control to manage specific network components (e.g., host firewalls). This model is also referred to as “Hardware as a service, HaaS” in a few sources.
PaaS (Platform as a Service) – The users are provided by a computing platform by the service providers so that they can develop and run their own applications using software databases, tools, software outsourcing services, and programming languages. In PaaS, the users are unauthorized to manage or control the operating systems, storage spaces, servers, and other components that make up the platform infrastructure. They get limited authority on adjustments associated with the configuration settings of the platform the software runs on and the software transferred to the cloud.
SaaS (Software as a Service) – The service providers provide access to the application software hosted on the server to multiple users. The users can interact and access cloud applications using the Internet’s interfaces without the need to install any applications. In this model, service via the Internet is provided and is priced on the basis of pay-per-use. Here users don’t have to monitor or manage the infrastructure components like operating system, storage devices, network, and platform. They are authorized to change structure/ configuration settings of the application only.
IoT (Internet of Things)
Internet of Things or (IoT) is a system of digital & mechanical machines, interrelated computing devices, animals, people or other objects provided with unique identifiers
(UIDs) and the capability to transport the data over a network eliminating the need for human to computer or human to human interaction.
Beyond traditional devices such as laptops, computers, tablets, smartphones, etc., IoT gives internet connectivity to everyday things and a diverse range of devices that use embedded technology to interact and communicate with the external environment with the internet.
A variety of industries and organizations are now using IoT for more efficiency, better customer understanding for delivering enhanced service, growth in business value and improved decision-making.
Benefits of enabling IoT in organizations:
- It generates more revenue
- It improves customer experience
- It saves time and money
- It enhances employee productivity
- It helps adapt and integrate business models
- It helps make better decisions in business
- It monitors the entire business processes
The objects that can come under the scope of IoT are thermostats, cars, connected security systems, electronic appliances, alarm clocks, vending machines, speaker systems, and more.
AI (Artificial Intelligence)
According to John McCarthy, AI is “The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs”. AI is achieved by examining the way human brain functions, thinks, decides, learns and works while trying to solve an issue, then utilizing the results of this study as the basis of developing intelligent systems and software.
AI is a technology and science based on disciplines like Psychology, Computer Science, Biology, Linguistics, Engineering, and Mathematics. Development of computer functions related to human intelligence, like learning, reasoning, and problem-solving is a major thrust of AI.
Benefits of enabling AI in organizations:
- It enhances automation and reduces errors
- It eliminates the requirement for humans to do tedious works
- It relives information overload
- More useful and powerful computers
- Better information handling
- Converts information to knowledge
Applications that have an impact of AI are gaming, expert systems, vision systems, speech recognition, handwriting recognition, intelligent robots, natural language processing and more.
